Unfortunately, most characters are in badly lit areas as they rely on Source's simple radiosity that gives most models a 'lightbox' feel.
As this picture shows, this makes most character encounters overly dark in many cases. Aside from toggling shaders off, not much can be done here as I can't control the lighting.
An ambient occlusion artifact can also be seen on the character's right arm which I also can't really do anything about.
